It’s Tuesday Again… And yup I’m a little behind! Yikes. The time is just flying by this fall and I’m so not ready for it. It’s 8 pm on Tuesday and I’m actually writing today’s Tuesday Ten Post. Well Shoot! I’m usually way more prepared than this!
This weeks post is another personal one. We took another vacation this past weekend over Fall Break and thought I’d share some of the fun! Here’s 10 fun facts about Lake Powell with some pictures from our trip!
1. The authorization of the Colorado River Storage Project Act by Congress on April 11, 1956 initiated the construction of Glen Canyon Dam, the key unit of one of the most extensive and complex river resource developments in the world.
2. It is a concrete arch dam with a crest length of 1,560 feet. It contains 4,901,000 cubic yards of concrete. The dam is 25 feet wide at the crest and 300 feet wide at the maximum base. Construction started in 1956 and was completed in 1964. The dam was dedicated in 1966.
3. Work on constructing the dam continued 24 hours a day until on September 13, 1963, the last of over 400,000 buckets of concrete was placed.
4. An estimated 3 million visitors enjoy the beauty and water at Lake Powell every year.
5. Lake Powell is 186 miles long and has almost 2,000 miles of shoreline – longer than the entire west coast of the U.S.A.!
6. There are 96 major canyons, some of which are 15 to 20 miles in length.
7. The largest fish caught at Lake Powell was in 1991. It was a Striped Bass weighing in at 48 lbs 11 oz.
8. There are currently 4,019,968,145,356 gallons of water in Lake Powell!
9. Lake Powell is 93.95 feet below Full Pool (Elevation 3,700)
10. Rainbow Bridge National Monument is generally considered the largest natural bridge in the world. Carved from red Navajo sandstone, the bridge is 290 feet tall and 270 feet across – higher than the United States Capitol Building – and nearly as long as a football field!
If you’ve NEVER been – you need to go! We took a house boat trip this time but you don’t need a houseboat. There’s camping, lodging, take a boat and more!
