The Tuesday Ten, Hair Tips | Guest Post

Today’s Tuesday Ten Post is another Guest Blogger. Her name is Sarah Fullmer. She’s a hairstylist and a lady I’ve known for years. She does an AMAZING job. I was so happy when she said she’d write this post for me. She’s super spunky, fully of life and knows her stuff. She is living in Kaysville but comes up to Logan once a month (Sometimes more) to do hair. I highly recommend her!

I am a
hairstylist and I LOVE my job. One of my favorite things about my job, is
educating my clients on proper hair care. With the huge popularity of Pinterest,
there have been a bunch of hair tips going around. How do you know what is
really beneficial and what is made up by some random person? I am going to give
you 10 tips and list a few of my favorite products that are tried and true.
Hopefully it will help in figuring out if those Pinterest tips are really
legit!
1.
When it comes to your shampoo and
conditioner, don’t go cheap.
Believe it or not, buying real professional product is not that much more
expensive than picking up your shampoo at Wal-Mart. When you use a professional
shampoo and conditioner, (that can’t be purchased at a drug store) it is so
much more concentrated than the typical 5 dollar product. This means that
instead of having to use a whole palm full of shampoo just to get a decent
lather, you only need about the size of a quarter or less. A little bit of it
goes a long way and your hair will thank you when you style it!
2.
If possible, don’t wash you hair
daily
Your scalp produces natural oils that are beneficial to your hair. By washing
it every day, you’re getting rid of those natural oils and the great benefits
that they have on your hair! Why get rid of them when they are free?!
3.
Shampoo your scalp, condition your
ends
When washing your hair, remember that shampoo is for your scalp and
conditioner is for your ends. Make sure to get a good lather on your scalp when
shampooing to ensure that it gets clean, and let your conditioner sit on your
ends for 3-5 minutes for extra benefits!
4.
Towel dry by blotting, not rubbing!
Most people tend to vigorously rub the towel all over their heads to try
and dry their hair as much as possible. This can cause fly aways, breakage, and
even thinning of the hair. Instead, take the towel and simply squeeze the water
out by blotting the towel with your hair wrapped inside it.
5.
Turn down the heat!
Most hair dryers have 3 heat settings; cold, warm, and hot. NEVER put
your hair dryer on hot. This will only cause more damage to your hair than
necessary, and in reality, it doesn’t cut the dry time down enough to make it
worth the damage that it is causing. Also, don’t forget to use a heat
protectant before blow drying! (See below for some recommended products!)
6.
When blow drying, dry with the
direction of the hair, not against it
By drying against the natural direction of the hair, you will end up having
a lot of unwanted static and frizz. Drying with the direction of the hair will
give you a nice smooth look!
7.
Avoid brushing your hair when it’s
wet
When your hair is wet, the elasticity of it is a lot higher than when it
is dry. This being said, if you are tugging and pulling at your hair while
brushing it while it’s wet, it is much more likely to break. Make sure to use a
comb instead of a brush, and be gentle with it. Wet hair is much more fragile
and the last thing you need is a lot of breakage!
8.
Don’t be afraid to cut your hair
One of the most common things I hear is “only trim off the very ends.”
That is definitely OK if that’s really all that needs to be trimmed, but in
most cases, it’s not. Anyone who is trying to grow their hair out has this terrible
fear of getting too much hair cut off. This is totally understandable. I have
long hair myself and I am the same way, but if your hair needs it, cut it! Your
hair will never get long like you want it if it keeps breaking off on the ends
from the lack of trimming it often enough. Everyone’s hair is different, but
getting a trim every 6-8 weeks will keep your hair healthy.
9.
Box color… Oh the horror…
Those celebrities on the front of that drug store box color and on the
commercials advertising for them, don’t use 10 DIY color on their hair.
Shocker, I know, but seriously who even believes that? I’m pretty sure just
about everyone has had a bad DIY hair color experience. I know I have! It only
took me one time as a teenager and having my mom try to highlight my hair to
realize that there was a reason that people go to school for that kind of
stuff. Those box colors are 10 dollars for a reason and are no good for your
hair. If you want a good long lasting color, get it done the right way. It will
be worth every penny, I promise. And us hair stylists are pretty entertaining
too! J
10.
You only have one head of hair, so
take good care of it!
There are so many awesome products out there to give you the results that
you are looking for with your hair. Whether it’s dry, frizzy, oily, or flat,
there are plenty of different professional products that can help you with
achieving the look you want. Just ask your stylist what he or she would
recommend for your hair! Here are a few of my favorites:
–
Trauma Treatment by Lanza– This is a leave in conditioner that
does about a million things! It is a heat protectant, extends your hair color
up to 107% longer, and heals over-processed hair, just to name a few. Most all
of my clients use it and can’t live without it! It is great for all hair types!
–
12 Benefits– This is a spray that you use on
damp hair. Like it says in the name, it has 12 benefits which include an anti-
aging formula, protection from chlorine for all you swimmers, and moisturizes
dry hair, along with many other great things! This is a serious must have
product for any hair type!
–
Tangle Me Free by
Neuma
–  This is the best detangler
that I have tried, and I have tried a lot of them! Not only does it smell
AMAZING, it really helps get rid of those nasty knots in your wet hair when
trying to comb through it. Not having to tug on the knots means less breakage
and less of a headache for you!

I could go
on and on about hair tips and products that I love. Just remember that you only
have one head of hair. Take good care of it!! J
